Classroom Activities

The following is a list of educational resources developed by the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and its partners. These modules and classroom activities are designed to help educators teach and discuss chemistry and risk education in their classrooms:

  • Water: No Dirt, No Germs
This activity introduces students to the chemistry that helps make drinking water safe and healthy. One of four activities developed for the 2011 International Year of Chemistry, students construct their own simple filtration and disinfection systems, highlighting an important everyday use of chemistry.

  • The Benefits of Chlorine Chemistry
Chlorine chemistry plays a critical role in meeting some of our most basic needs while scientists pioneer advances in modern medicine and renewable energy.

  • Building Block Chemistry
These lesson activities were designed to introduce students in grades 5 through 9 to basic chemistry and the periodic table. Students learn how chlorine and other elements combine to make products they use every day—from soccer balls to tennis shoes, from televisions to vinyl siding.

  • Chlorine Experiments
These experiments are designed for a variety of grade levels and help demonstrate the properties and beneficial uses of chlorine.

  • Water Germs Busted By Chlorine! (PDF)
Two mighty superheroes—The Chlorin8tor and Little Hector, The Disinfector—are the stars of a downloadable coloring and activity book created by the Chlorine Chemistry Division of ACC. Here students understand the value and science of drinking water chlorination; in their first adventure The Chlorin8tor and Little Hector explore the biology of four common waterborne pathogens through the lens of a microscope.

  • Swimming Pool Germs Busted by Chlorine! (PDF)
The Chlorin8tor, armed with his Electron Grabber tool and trusty sidekick, Little Hector, The Disinfector, returns in a new adventure to battle harmful germs that invade pool water and make swimmers sick. While enjoying this activity, be sure to pay attention to the "Sense-Able" swimming check list and the "No-Fool Pool Rules".

  • Flu Germs Busted by Chlorine! (PDF)
In their third adventure, the Chlorin8tor and Little Hector battle the viruses that cause flu. The Disinfecting Duo teach kids the “sneaky way” that viruses spread and how they can use that knowledge to avoid flu.

  • Chlorine Compound Library
This article series profiled a unique chlorine-containing compound each month for over three years. Chemistry becomes fun through these short, colorful articles that combine basic chemistry with practical use information. The Chlorine Compound Library makes approximately 40 previously published articles accessible. Teachers and home-schooling parents may wish to take advantage of follow-up questions and science activities for students.

  • Pioneering Science for Safe Water: Harriette Chick Reveals the Laws of Disinfection
Dr. Chick was the first to understand the factors that affect the rates of germ-killing by disinfectants. After 100 years, her work continues to help water treatment operators provide the clean water that rushes into our lives at a turn of the faucet.

  • Science Education for Public Understanding Resources
With support from the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council, the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) developed the Understanding Environmental Health Risks Module, which is designed to help students learn to think critically about the environment.

  • Project Learning Tree Resources
The module provides students with a framework for applying scientific processes and higher order thinking skills to environmental issues. Students will learn to define and assess risk and the costs and benefits associated with various environmental policies and issues.
