The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently unveiled a new online tool, the Building America Solutions Center, which provides information and services on building science and building efficiency.
Buildings today account for one-third of all U.S. energy consumption, so the tool is designed to help promote energy reduction and improve the overall performance and safety of buildings. From case studies and images to guidelines for projects around the home, the site offers a variety of helpful tips and research for homeowners and building professionals.
Energy-efficiency technology made possible by chemistry and can significantly reduce energy consumption and drive down energy costs.
For example, the site provides information on how to support temperature regulation through efficient wall insulation as well as prevent water build-up behind a tub or shower by applying moisture-resistant backing material to the wall.
According to the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), by 2050, the amount of energy used by the building sector could increase by as much as 62 percent and the amount of CO2 emissions by 87 percent.
In addition, combining building efficiency improvements with lower-carbon fuels could lead to a 41 percent reduction in energy use and a 70 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
