The voting period closes on Wednesday, November 28, just before the clock strikes midnight (EST), so be sure to let us know today which of the eight finalist pictures you think best conveys chemistry’s role in helping to maximize day-to-day energy efficiency and smart energy use.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), homeowners can save up to 30 percent on their energy bills through simple saving measures, and many of the pictures submitted to the #Chemistry2Energy contest help to tell that story.
Fluorescent light bulbs and LED bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs; using high-efficiency appliances like new ENERGY STAR-qualified refrigerators can save enough energy to light an average house for nearly four months; and taking small steps like using a programmable thermostat and recharging old batteries can help cut back on waste.
Chemistry also plays an important role in developing home and building energy innovations like solar panels, Low-Emissivity (Low-E) windows, and insulating products like spray foam and building wrap.
