Engineering knowledge can improve our global population’s quality of life — and that includes ensuring a sustainable future through advanced energy technologies that help us make the most of our domestic energy resources. That is the goal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers conference this week in San Diego.
Now in its sixth year, the ASME International Conference on Energy Sustainability will bring together industry professionals, scientists, policymakers and academics to explore the latest innovations and R&D in solar and renewables, fuel cells and advanced energy efficiency technologies.
According to the ASME website:
New technologies and systems-thinking offer a path forward from environmental and economic catastrophe to a clean energy future. At this critical time, it is essential for universities, industries, R&D laboratories & Government agencies to cooperate and share information to propel clean energy technology into the future.
As many of you know, these advanced “clean energy” technologies — from solar panels, to wind turbines, to advanced batteries and fuel cells — begin with chemistry, as do innovations in energy efficiency that help us make our energy sources go further while lowering costs.
As ACC President and CEO Cal Dooley explained during the Alliance to Save Energy’s (ASE) Great Energy Efficiency Day last May, reduced energy demand is the cleanest energy there is, and energy efficiency can’t be overlooked in debates on sustainable energy:
There is broad consensus that energy efficiency is the easiest and most cost-effective way to increase energy supplies, promote sustainability, enhance energy security and reduce energy costs. It’s a win-win proposition.
