The Sodium Chlorite/Chlorine Dioxide Panel was formed in 1987. Over the years, the Panel has sponsored numerous toxicological and environmental studies to evaluate the continued safe use of sodium chlorite and chlorine dioxide.
Chlorine dioxide is a preferred disinfectant in applications where the use of other disinfectants either does not provide the required efficacy, or where their use produces undesirable effects such as taste, odor or the production of chlorinated or oxidized organic compounds. For example, Chlorine dioxide is used to disinfect sewage and plant wastes.
