Crystalline silica is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust and a major component of rocks, sand and soil. It is one of the most common construction and manufacturing materials in the world, contained in sand, brick, concrete, masonry and clay tile, and in the gravel, rocks and soil disturbed in farming or used in road building, construction and as railroad ballast. Silica also is a critical material for foundries and steelmaking and is a key component of abrasives, paints, high tech equipment, glass, ceramics and thousands of consumer products.
The Crystalline Silica Panel of the American Chemistry Council provides a forum for sponsoring research and analysis relating to crystalline silica and works to ensure that sound science and feasibility information are considered in regulatory or legislative initiatives dealing with crystalline silica.
